TERRACOTTA MATERIAL UNDER PASSIVE HOUSE AND BIOCONSTRUCTION STANDARD

The houses built under the Passive House and Bioconstrucción standard require soils that give an effective response to the thermal and natural materials without forgetting their technical and aesthetic level. In this sense, as pointed out by flooring specialists, architects and builders, terracotta tiles, a natural pavement, is a good choice for its thermal properties, easy cleaning, resistance to traffic and multiple decorative possibilities.

Composed of 100% clay, terracotta floors do not accumulate static electricity, which makes them repel dust and do not attract mites, something fundamental in the health field. Also noteworthy is their easy maintenance and cleaning, they are very resistant to traffic, so they are a good choice for kitchens, corridors or rooms and even for outdoor pavements.

In addition, the terracotta tiles offer a warm, natural and comfortable footprint, helping to create not only the warm and homey atmosphere but also contributing to make the different spaces warm and welcoming. Not forgetting that it is one of the best floors for the use of underfloor heating.

A CLASSIC IN RUSTIC STYLER DECOR

The most natural and handmade materials that we can choose for our house are the terracotta floors. Although they have traditionally been present in rustic and camper environments, today they can also be chosen in more contemporary spaces, with a perfect combination between modern and classic. The secret of your success? Its timeless beauty, fruit of a naturalness without limits.
The terracotta floors are a classic in rustic style decor. There is no town house that boasts that it does not have a good mud floor on the ground floor (for the top floor the star material has always been wood). The truth is that the earthy colors, natural and heterogeneous texture and simple finishes make this material a classic of rustic pavements. Actually there is a new design line that use this type of material to create a new flooring look mixed with modern ones.

One of the characteristics of this material is its heterogeneous appearance, which is the result of the craftsmanship that defines the entire manufacturing process. You are able to create art with the terracotta tiles.
Although the manufacturing process of the terracotta tiles comes from old, there are still companies, like us, Sebastian Perez SL with more than 100 years of experience that are dedicated to manufacture this type of products. There are several ways of doing this, but in general terms the process consists in putting the clay in molds previously manufactured with the shape of the tile and to cook it in special furnaces. We work with a special formula that make us different from other manufactures. Our secret is in the clay, in the way that we make the clay and of course the kind, that you only can find it in the Murcia region, South Spain. The clay we use is so different to the one you find in other countries like Mexico, Chile or Asia.

Together with the hand of man, these are the three elements used to manufacture our products. The variety of our formats creates combinations of striking colour and beauty between different pieces of terracotta, terracotta and glazed pieces, terracotta and marble, terracotta and natural stone, etc.

This type of totally manual manufacture gives the clay tiles their characteristic rustic appearance and irregular texture. When some part of the process is mechanized, or in those more industrialized productive processes, the result is clay tiles of appearance and texture more homogeneous and that is not very good for that art you should create.

HANDMADE TERRACOTTA BRICKS ONE OF THE BEST NATURAL CONSTRUCTION MATERIAL

Sebastian Perez, HandmadeTerracotta Bricks are one of the best Natural Construction Material  for the construction of Eco-Friendly  & Cost-Effective Buildings .

A clay brick is a traditional masonry construction element. It may be solid or perforated and may be used for building or paving.

Terracotta/earthenware was the only known type of ceramic produced by Western and pre-Columbian people until the 14th century, when imported European fired stoneware began production. Terracotta has been used throughout history for sculpture and pottery as well as for bricks and roof shingles. In ancient times, the first clay sculptures were dried (baked) in the sun after being formed. They were later placed in the ashes of open hearths to harden, and finally kilns were used, similar to those used for pottery today. However, only after firing to high temperature would it be classed as a ceramic material.

These bricks are used in load-bearing walls, partition walls, facing, ceilings and floors. Solid bricks offer good thermal properties, load bearing capacities and compressive strength.

Solid clay brick offers several advantages over other structural materials. It has very high compressive strength, requires no formwork, its constituent materials are widely available and its manufacture is less damaging to the environment than the production of concrete. A clay brick may be produced in different ways. It is molded and may be fired or naturally air dried.

Architectural terracotta refers either to decorated ceramic elements such as antefixes and revetments, usually brightly painted, which made a large contribution to the appearance of temples and other buildings in the classical architecture of Europe, as well as in the Ancient Near East, or to forms of ceramic skins used to surface buildings from the 19th century onwards. In the latter sense unglazed architectural terracotta became fashionable as an architectural ceramic construction material In Spain in the 1570s, in England in the 1860s, and in the United States in the 1870s.

Terracotta had the advantage of being cheap and light. It was adaptable to mass-production techniques for stock shapes, although the plaster moulds had a limited capability for re-use. Additionally it could be freely worked by craftsmen to make custom-sculptured adornments and plaques. It was accepted as a material by the Arts and Crafts movement because despite seeming a mass-produced material it was handmade and designed by craftsmen. It had a manufacture time of about eight weeks and each piece had to be made over-size to allow for shrinkage as the clay body dried. To avoid cracking the pieces had to be quite thin.

Today many people that are building their houses choose to use eco-friendly building materials. An eco-friendly building material increases the efficiency of energy used and reduces impact on human well-being and the environment. Of all the material used during construction, one often ignores the value of using the right brick. If you are looking for a brick that is eco-friendly and cost-effective than I would suggest you could go for hollow brick.

THE ACTUALLY TREND HAS TAKEN A SIGNIFICANT TURN

The new trends in interior design seek to take a step back and play with craft elements, elements of the past. The actually trend has taken a significant turn, where the digitally designed tiles and mechanical contracting, sought the absurd perfection are no longer so required by designers and architects. The trend is the retro, the old, the imperfectionism of the materials, the reality of creation where each material  made by hand is different to each other. We should look for the fusion of the beautiful and the comfortable concept with a base of nature. A deep search for natural materials that reflect comfort, life and health. An enforcement of the use of bio-natural materials that guarantee the relationship between man and nature.

An abundance of natural materials find in a house is the way to follow- The wood flooring and the light walls running into the terracotta tile in the next romm is the right idea of the new trend.

MINIMALIST & TERRACOTTA NOW ARE BEST FRIENDS

The use of ceramics in its origins was crude, rustic and basic but nowadays ceramic takes on a more decorative dimension, where new ideas gain their place in the market of decoration and interior design. When balanced with a minimalist, mostly-white kitchen, a terracotta floor warms up the room without bringing it to a rustic place. ORIGINS OF THE CERAMIC SEBASTIAN PEREZ

Sebastian Perez Ceramic, located in the Northwest of the Region of Murcia, is located in the small town of Valentin, a small town settled, as its name suggests (VAL, valley, LENTIN, mud, mud valley) over a zone of rich clays, marl from the decomposition of aluminous rocks and silicates with great absorption of water.

The beginning of ceramics in this area must date back to the Late Bronze Age, some 3,800 years ago, although there are vestiges of the Neolithic period in the nearby Sierra de La Puerta (6,000 years ago). The origin of Valentin is roman, in century I a. C and its history is linked to ceramics mainly. We received visits from colleges, universities, working groups from many countries through the Chamber of Commerce of Murcia, etc., interested in our history and our know-how, which in very little has changed from our predecessors.
Clay + water + biomass: they are the only elements that intervene in our products and that our hands combine in their right measure.
In Sebastian Perez, through its eight generations, we worked these rich clays with our hands, in the same way as our ancestors, with a totally handmade manufacturing process, making bricks, tiles and roof tiles with some technical characteristics, that always have had them, are very precious in the construction and decoration of our days, such as, among others, thermal insulation, acoustic insulation, durability, freezing, resistance to compression, etc. Special mention to the boom of the bio-construction in which our products have great acceptance, 100% natural, ecological. Another aspect to take into account is the baking of our products, these are cooked with biomass (orujillo, almond shell, ...) which, together with the characteristics of the clays, provide an authentic, genuine, showy and very personal flamed, each of the pieces that makes them unique, none is equal to another in this sense. These tones range from straw, pink, salmon to reddish, which in the final product provide a random combination of very pleasant tones, comforting peace and tranquility to the senses.

As manual products we adapt to the needs of the client, especially in the restorations of old buildings, Making exact reproductions of existing parts, etc., special mention should be made of the manufacture of innumerable pieces for the city of Pompeii and Royal Palace of Caserta, both a World Heritage Site by Unesco or Palazzo Barberini in Rome, among others..

 Our products are:
·       Handmade solid brick: standard sizes 3,5x12x25 – 5x12x25
·       Handmade tiles: standard sizes 20x20x2 – 25x25x2 – 30x30x2 – 40x40x3 – 15x30x2 – 21x36x2 – hexagon 20 – octogon 30. Also skirting, rounded edge, stairs, pool edge, banister, bards, big sizes, etc

SUGGESTIONS FOR LAYING TILES

* Wet the tile before laying it in position.
* Leave a minimum distance of 1 cm between each tile.
* Do not look for a tight fit; the rough edges of the tile make it impossible.
* Do not stain the tile (cement, etc.) while laying it. If you do stain it, clean it as soon as possible.
* Be very careful when using dyes for the joints.
* Do not choose the tiles based on their colour owing to the tone variety typical of terracotta.

Laying terracotta floor tiles is no more difficult than fitting any other tiled flooring, so this will depend on your skill and experience. If you are laying unsealed tiles, then it is essential to allow the moisture to be released prior to sealing and / or glazing, and this could take several days. Moisture levels will depend on the depth and material of the subfloor, and the depth and moisture content of the tiles and adhesive, so take advice from your installer or supplier.

The colour and tones will vary from batch to batch so ‘shuffle’ the tiles for a mixed balance and expect minor chips and blemishes in some ranges; this is part of their natural appeal. Our terracotta tiles are handmade, 100% bioconstrucción.

TERRACOTA TILES MADE FROM & BENEFITS

What is terracotta tiles made from?

Terracotta tiles are made from a mixture of clays at fired at a lower temperature, resulting in a softer tile with a rustic appearance. They are usually frost-resistant, making them ideal for outdoor use.
You will find that terracotta tiles come in a range of colours, from warm red and gold through to heather tones, brown, grey and black. As well as their traditional square appearance, they come in a brick form and other shapes, such as hexagonal, sometimes with decorative colours and inserts to create patterns.

The benefits of terracotta.
  • They are often as durable as real stone floor tiles and are just as long lasting
  • Are inexpensive
  • They work well in areas of heavy traffic
  • They ideal for use with underfloor heating
On the downside, if they are bought unsealed they must be treated, or they will stain easily.
